The course is, for all intents and purposes, taught at a college level and requires a tremendous amount of reading and preparation for every class session. Students are to read and take notes on the assigned chapters in addition to completing an evidence based flowchart in preparation for the weekly debate. These flow charts are an exercise in historical argumentation in preparation for the writing requirement on the AP Exam.

Debate Prep
On Fridays when there is no test scheduled, students will hold a class debate. The purpose of these discussions is to practice the analytical thinking required in the AP History essay assignment. For example, debating 'was Ellis Island a positive or negative experience' prepares students to write an evidence based essay 'comparing and contrasting the immigrant experience at Ellis Island'. Students should prepare for the debate by first reading the primary source documents handed out in class on Wednesday. After selecting evidence from 2 or 3 persuasive documents, students should use their textbook or the internet to provide supplementary research.
